GWAPE

In my photo, I chose to wear a colorful sweater and light blouse. Around my neck is a dream catcher, my hair is down, and I have no makeup on. The colorful clothing represents my wish to become more “colorful” or show my “true colors”. The dream catcher symbolizes me catching dreams and not giving up on them easily. Usually, I wear my hair up or pulled back, but when someone’s hair is down, it shows they are relaxed and I have never been too comfortable with my frizzy, curly head. “When it (Griet's hair) was uncovered it seemed to belong to another Griet” (Chevalier 122). I’m not implying I’m a completely different person when my hair is down, but rather more comfortable and secure. Wearing makeup can mean that people want to change their outer self, subconsciously transferring to the desire to change their inner self. I do not want to worry about showing my untouched face.

In order to achieve this identity, I will wear my hair down more often. I could try different ways of pulling it back instead of just a ponytail. I can go days with no makeup. I will wear bright, colorful clothes to coax myself out of hiding in a corner, since the damsel in distress wouldn’t wear a big neon sign reading, “Neon Lights” when hiding from Dracula. I will speak to new people and try to find others with similar interests as me. I will focus on the long-term when I’m bored or frustrated with learning something new, since obtaining that basic knowledge will allow me to come closer to my dreams.

Griet let her hair show and, once done, she was braver and allowed her inner strength to take over her shyness sometimes. “Now that he had seen my hair, now that he had seen me revealed, I no longer felt I had something precious to hide and keep to myself. I could be freer” (Chevalier 196). Griet was able to let go of her insecurities once she let her hair down. When my hair is loose and not tied up or pulled back, I feel confident. Griet also never wore makeup. Few people, if any, wore makeup in that time period. If they could forget about eyeliner then I certainly can as well.

  1. I agree with you're statement about the hair. I have the same problem, and when it is down I also see a sign of confidence in your outer appearance. The dream catcher is also a symbol of fighting off bad dreams and memories, which I find very inspiring. It's a really good symbol, and I see lots of good in it. I see lots of hope and determination in the picture. It really shows in everything you portrayed in it. I loved the symbolism, I find the picture in general very beautiful.

  2. I think all the things you said were really good. I can connect to letting your hair down because I wear my hair up everyday to school and when I do wear it down, which is not that often, it feels different, but in a good way. I can also connect to not wearing makeup. I don't like to hide my face in makeup because it's not me. Something that stood out to me was when you said how letting your hair down makes you feel confident because it's true. I think pulling my hair back is like hiding something. When I let it down I feel more like myself. In conclusion, I really like your picture and what you said. Always follow your dreams!

  3. I love what you said about trying to wear more colorful clothes to stand out more, rather than trying to sink in with the background; and I can truly connect with this idea. I also understand the idea with trying to not wear any makeup, I don't really wear any at all unless it's absolutely necessary to, and I don't think you really need to wear any at all. Makeup to me is exactly what it says it is, something that you use to make up your face in an idea of what you'd like to look like. Some people say that they use it to help complement your face, and this can be true, but I say people use it to hide themselves, like a blemish. The blemish is a part of you, and you shouldn't have to feel ashamed about it at all! I loved how you connected everything seemingly seamlessly, and overall I love it!

  4. I really love the way you said the dream catcher symbolizes you catching your dreams and giving them up. I can really connect with this because although I don't truly know what I want to be or do, I have a dream that I wish can come true. I think we should chase our dreams and never give up on them. My dream is a very hard thing to accomplish but I will chase it and try my best to make it come true. I also really like how you are showing your true colors with your clothe. You and your picture are very beautiful!

I love your picture! The way you showed symbolism through your whole wardrobe and hair and accessories was really cool! I loved how you wore the colorful blouse to show how you want to show your true colors. I also liked how you wore your hair down cause it looks gorgeous. When you said " When my hair is loose and not tied up or pulled back, I feel confident" I thought that was a great statement! Love your blog.

  8. We've been friends for as long as I can remember- ever since kindergarten. Haha, I have a bad memory. Anyway, it's been amazing seeing both of us mature into what we are now... Highschoolers!!! It's pretty scary. I know we still have a LONG way to go, and I can only hope we'll stay friends for the rest of the way :)
